The Denver Nuggets have taken a notable step in reshaping their coaching staff by parting ways with head coach Michael Malone and promoting David Adelman to head coach. This decision comes after a playoff run where Adelman led the team to a challenging seven-game series against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
As the Nuggets shift their focus toward enhancing their coaching staff, there’s buzz of interest in hiring former NBA champions J.J. Barea and Jared Dudley as assistant coaches. NBA insider Marc Stein reported that the Nuggets have received permission to interview Dudley, who previously played a significant role for the Los Angeles Lakers during their 2020 championship run, and expressed strong interest in Barea, a key player in the Dallas Mavericks’ 2011 title win.
Both Barea and Dudley bring valuable championship experience to the Nuggets. Barea transitioned to coaching after his playing career, most recently serving as head coach for Mets de Guaynabo in Puerto Rico while also having experience in player development with the Mavericks. Dudley has spent the last four seasons as an assistant coach with the Mavericks alongside Jason Kidd, garnering interest from various teams this offseason.
The Nuggets’ decision to fire Malone, who led them to their first championship, signals a shift in strategy as they aim to build on their recent successes. Despite a relatively quiet offseason compared to other teams, the Nuggets maintain a strong core with star players Nikola Jokic, Jamal Murray, Aaron Gordon, and Michael Porter Jr. all secured under contract.
The offseason also saw the departure of Russell Westbrook, who declined his player option and will enter free agency after contributing 13.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 6.1 assists per game last season. Additionally, the Nuggets anticipate losing other players like DeAndre Jordan and Dario Saric.
Executive vice president of basketball operations Ben Tenzer noted the team’s near attempts to make selections in the 2025 NBA Draft, though ultimately, they did not pick any players, choosing instead to sign Missouri guard Tamar Bates to a two-way contract. The Nuggets are now prioritizing bolstering their roster through free agency while laying the groundwork for a competitive coaching staff with names like Barea and Dudley potentially joining.
This direction aims to equip the Nuggets with the necessary tools to challenge for another title in the upcoming season, building on their recent achievements while fostering a winning culture with experienced leaders at the helm.
