A tragic incident occurred in Statesville, North Carolina, as the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) launched an investigation into a small private jet crash that claimed the lives of seven individuals, including former NASCAR driver Greg Biffle. The accident took place shortly after the aircraft departed from Statesville Regional Airport on Thursday morning.
Family members confirmed that Biffle, his wife Cristina, and their two children, Ryder and Emma, were among the deceased. In a heartfelt statement, the families expressed their grief, stating, “This tragedy has left all of our families heartbroken beyond words. Each of them meant everything to us, and their absence leaves an immeasurable void in our lives.” They also requested privacy during this difficult time.
The crash involved a Cessna C550 jet, which reportedly went down shortly after takeoff while attempting to return to the airport. Besides Biffle and his family, three other passengers—Dennis Dutton, his son Jack, and Craig Wadsworth, a well-known figure in the NASCAR community—were also aboard the plane.
Iredell County Chief Deputy Bill Hamby confirmed that the incident occurred around 10:15 a.m. on Thursday, and North Carolina’s Governor Josh Stein expressed his condolences, describing the news as “heartbreaking.” Stein noted Biffle’s impactful life, highlighting his courageous work following Hurricane Helene in western North Carolina.
Digital creator and motorsports streamer Garrett Mitchell, known as “Cleetus McFarland,” shared that Biffle was flying to visit him at the time of the crash. Biffle, a licensed pilot, was recognized as one of NASCAR’s greatest drivers with 19 career wins. His team, RFK Racing, expressed their devastation over the loss of their “cherished member,” while NASCAR honored him as a beloved driver and friend within the racing community.
A witness at the airport reported seeing the plane engulfed in flames after the crash, describing hearing a loud boom followed by a fire. The NTSB has begun interviews and recovered the cockpit voice recorder as part of its efforts to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the crash. Investigators are currently working to determine the identity of the pilot during the flight, with indications that they already possess substantial information.
Flight tracking data indicated that the jet departed the runway and made a left turn back toward the airport shortly after takeoff, never climbing above 2,000 feet.
