A tragic incident has occurred in Australia, where a former Fiji resident, Simon Chand, died in police custody following an alleged violent assault on his wife, Renuka Chand. The couple, who moved to Australia several years ago, were involved in a domestic dispute at their home in Lurnea, southwest Sydney. Authorities allege that Simon, 60, attacked his 58-year-old wife with a weapon before fleeing. Following the incident, Renuka, injured and in distress, reached out to neighbors for help and was transported to Liverpool Hospital, where she is reported to be recovering from serious injuries.
The situation took a dramatic turn when Simon was later found at a relative’s home in Sadleir, with his brother-in-law notifying the police of his whereabouts. At the time of his arrest, Simon was reportedly experiencing a suspected drug overdose, prompting ambulance officers to request the removal of his handcuffs. He was taken to Westmead Hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. As a result, the New South Wales Police have initiated a critical incident investigation, which is being led by the Auburn Police Area Command under the guidance of the Professional Standards Command and the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.
This incident brings to light ongoing concerns about domestic violence, an issue that remains prevalent in both Fiji and Australia. It highlights the necessity for more effective preventive measures and support systems for victims. In Fiji, an alarming statistic shows that nearly two out of three women face physical or sexual violence in their lifetimes. In response to this, frameworks like the Fiji National Action Plan to Prevent Violence Against All Women and Girls, launched in June 2023, have been established. This initiative focuses on community engagement, increasing awareness, and creating supportive and safe environments for women and girls.
Despite the tragedy, this incident serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of community support systems and awareness-raising efforts about domestic violence. It underscores the urgent need for collective action to protect vulnerable individuals and promote healthier, safer environments for families. There is a pressing need for society to come together to provide protection and support for those at risk, fostering communities where all individuals can live free from fear and harm.
