Notre Dame Cathedral is set to reopen this weekend following a meticulous reconstruction process involving over 1,200 artisans dedicated to restoring the iconic 12th-century monument, which suffered extensive damage in a devastating fire in April 2019. The grand reopening will feature two days of ceremonies attended by around 50 world leaders and dignitaries, celebrating the cathedral’s artistic, historical, and spiritual significance. Central to the festivities will be the cathedral’s magnificent organ, boasting approximately 8,000 pipes.
Olivier Latry, the cathedral’s longest-serving organist, is eager to resume his role, having been the last person to play the grand organ before the fire on Palm Sunday in 2019. Reflecting on his reaction to the blaze, Latry recalls receiving the shocking news while on tour in Vienna, fearing that the entire structure and the organ were lost. Upon returning to Paris, he was relieved to discover that much of Notre Dame still stood, its towers illuminated against the spring sky.
The rich history of the organ dates back to the 14th century, with its most recent major iteration completed in 1730. Many of its components have been preserved, including pipes from the 1400s. During the restoration, master organ builder Christian Lutz noted that while the organ was covered in lead dust, it remained remarkably intact, thanks to the skilled handling by firefighters.
The restoration team carefully dismantled and refurbished the organ before reinstalling it in the cathedral. This intricate process involved late-night work sessions to ensure each pipe harmonized perfectly, a challenging task in the midst of ongoing construction.
Recently, Latry had the opportunity to play the organ in the now-revealed cathedral; he noted that the acoustics have dramatically improved, allowing sounds to resonate for up to eight seconds. For the ceremonial events, a special blessing and “wake-up” ritual for the organ is planned, emphasizing the deep spiritual connection it holds within the liturgy.
Latry expressed excitement for the ceremonial moment, where the archbishop will call upon the organ, and he will respond with improvisational music, highlighting the organist’s role as the voice and spirit of Notre Dame.
