EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The Navy football team, which had entered the game undefeated, was anticipated to challenge Notre Dame on Saturday. However, the No. 24 Midshipmen faltered, giving the No. 12 Irish multiple chances to dominate the matchup at MetLife Stadium. Navy, which had committed just two turnovers over its first six games, saw that number skyrocket to six, allowing Notre Dame to seize control and secure a 51-14 victory. The Midshipmen appeared unprepared for the high-stakes environment. With this win, Notre Dame remains in the conversation for the College Football Playoff, achieving a sixth straight win following a previous loss to Northern Illinois that had placed the Irish under scrutiny.

Notre Dame’s defense and special teams played crucial roles, alleviating pressure on an Irish offense that has struggled for consistency throughout the season. The defense alone was responsible for four turnovers, including three fumble recoveries and one interception. Special teams added two fumble recoveries from Navy’s muffed punt returns. This marked the first time since 1977 that Notre Dame recovered five fumbles in a game. Notably, the Irish did not commit any turnovers themselves, resulting in a commanding 6-0 turnover margin. Head coach Marcus Freeman emphasized the importance of protecting the football, crediting their preparation for the game.

Navy came into the game ranked 15th in the FBS for turnovers gained, but Notre Dame’s strong performance led the Midshipmen to face challenges, including losing their first fumble of the season during their opening drive. Additionally, Navy failed to score during a red-zone trip in the second quarter, marking their first failure to score in 25 red-zone attempts this season. Until this game, Navy had not trailed by more than seven points in any contest. The Irish quickly jumped to a 14-0 lead within the first 10 minutes.

“It’s about our ability to respond and reload,” said Notre Dame quarterback Riley Leonard. He highlighted their focus on maintaining composure, regardless of events on the previous play. Leonard guided the balanced Notre Dame offense, accumulating 178 passing yards and 83 rushing yards. He completed 13 of 21 passes, with two touchdown passes, and added a one-yard touchdown run. Running back Jeremiyah Love continued to impress, rushing for 102 yards and two touchdowns, extending his streak to eight games with a rushing touchdown this season.

The return of wide receiver Jordan Faison and offensive guard Billy Schrauth proved significant for Notre Dame’s offense. Faison contributed with four receptions for 52 yards, marking his best performance since recovering from an ankle injury. Schrauth returned to the lineup for the first time since an ankle injury, starting at left guard.

Despite not having previously recovered a fumble this season, Notre Dame capitalized on Navy’s mistakes. The Irish succeeded in recovering multiple fumbles, including one from Navy quarterback Blake Horvath, which linebacker Jaylen Sneed returned for a touchdown.

Overall, Navy managed 310 offensive yards, with Horvath accounting for 217 of those through rushing and passing. However, the Midshipmen’s offensive struggles, combined with their turnovers, overshadowed their yardage. Notre Dame’s all-around performance ensures they met a crucial test successfully, exceeding expectations in the process.
