The controversy emerged when Freeman was present at Mishawaka High School to watch his son, Vinny, participate in a wrestling match on January 3. According to reports from the South Bend Tribune, the purported incident involved an interaction between Freeman and Chris Fleeger, an assistant coach from New Prairie High School, both of whom were at the Al Smith Wrestling Invitational.
Fleeger has filed a police report alleging battery against Freeman, prompting law enforcement to investigate the matter and forward their findings to the prosecutor’s office for potential charges. The timeline for when a decision regarding charges might be made remains unclear.
The altercation is said to have taken place following Vinny’s match against Hanover Central’s Israel Sinnott, which Vinny lost. As Vinny was escorted off the mat by his father and Penn head coach Brad Harper, Fleeger reportedly started a verbal exchange with the group. It is alleged that Freeman made some form of physical contact with Fleeger while attempting to exit the venue. A statement from the university asserted that Vinny Freeman faced verbal harassment from a local coach during and following his match, and emphasized that Coach Freeman and his wife merely intervened to protect their son. The university firmly stated that Coach Freeman did not engage physically with anyone and expressed confidence that the video evidence available will exonerate him, deeming the accusations baseless.
