Acting Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), Lavi Rokoika, addressed concerns regarding the agency’s impartiality during a recent press conference. She denied allegations that FICAC has been used as a tool for targeting political figures, asserting that the organization operates independently and is governed by internal protocols rather than external influence.

Responding to public worries and media speculations about FICAC’s independence, Rokoika stated emphatically, “We have not been weaponised. We do not take our instructions from anyone in government or in Parliament.” She elaborated that every complaint made to the commission is subjected to rigorous checks, involving multiple layers of legal and investigative reviews. This systematic approach is designed to minimize the risk of bias in decision-making.

“The decision comes to the Office of the Commissioner, but there are many people within the organisation who deal with any one particular file,” she explained. Rokoika highlighted that the processes in place are meant to ensure that no single individual holds the power to make determining decisions independently, thereby reinforcing the commission’s commitment to transparency and fairness.

Additionally, when questioned about the legality of her appointment, Rokoika refrained from making comments, as the matter is currently under judicial review. “There are lawful processes in place to deal with questions about it. It is currently before the courts, therefore it would be inappropriate for me to comment,” she noted.

Rokoika concluded by assuring the public that FICAC would persist in adhering to its established protocols to fulfill its mandate in a transparent and independent manner. This commitment not only strengthens the integrity of the commission but also fosters public confidence in its role within the governance framework of Fiji.
