Artist Angel Acordagoitia has created a new movie poster for “Bride of Frankenstein,” featured in the debut exhibit “Rewind: A VHS Revival” at the Orange County Fair. This exhibit celebrates the nostalgic era of VHS, highlighting the artistry behind movie posters and the impact of iconic film imagery on popular culture.
As viewers traverse through the exhibit, they are reminded of classic cinematic moments, such as Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly in “Back to the Future” and Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker in the “Star Wars” saga. Joy Feuer, the co-founder and curator of the exhibit, emphasizes the dedication and creativity of the artists responsible for these images, often overlooked despite their significant contributions to film.
The exhibit places a special focus on the work of the late John Alvin, whose design process can be seen through various displays. His artwork for films like “Blade Runner” and “Batman Forever” is showcased, illustrating the evolution of poster art from rough sketches to finished products. Alvin’s widow, Andrea, and others involved with the exhibit highlight the importance of recognizing the behind-the-scenes artists who shape cinematic experiences.
In addition to famous posters, the exhibit includes works by renowned graphic designers, scenic backdrop companies, and interactive experiences for fairgoers. Visitors can immerse themselves in nostalgia through displays resembling old video rental stores and take photos with cutouts from beloved films like “The Wizard of Oz.”
Acordagoitia’s live painting demonstration attracted attention as he worked on “Bride of Frankenstein,” where he expressed his passion for art and the supportive role of his family. Other artists, including Scotty Roller and TerriLee Holm, joined the effort to create engaging movie poster art during the fair.
This exhibit not only serves as a celebration of film history but also fosters a sense of community among artists and attendees, generating excitement and enjoyment for fans of all ages. The fair, running through August 17, continues to offer a refreshing experience with its blend of nostalgic elements and contemporary artistic expressions.
