Northern Division Tops Fiji’s Poverty Benefit Scheme in 2022-23 Annual Report

The latest annual report from Fiji’s Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Protection has revealed that the Northern Division recorded the highest number of recipients under the Poverty Benefit Scheme for the 2022-2023 financial year. With 6,119 households receiving assistance, the Northern Division surpassed other regions, such as the North West and Central Divisions, which had 4,723 and 4,514 beneficiaries respectively. Overall, the Poverty Benefit Scheme supported a total of 24,312 households across Fiji during this period, with 3,595 new families added and 3,063 reviews completed to ensure continued eligibility.

The high uptake in the Northern Division reflects the significant socio-economic challenges families face in the region, such as limited employment opportunities and income-generation options. This situation has made it necessary for the scheme to extend its reach and provide much-needed financial support to these communities.

The allocated budget for the Poverty Benefit Scheme was $35.86 million in the revised plan, and 84 percent of this was utilized in the financial year. Other divisions receiving support included South Eastern, South West, and Nasinu, benefiting 3,732, 3,704, and 1,520 households respectively.

This report complements prior findings about the growing number of Fijians receiving social welfare assistance. For instance, the number of beneficiaries rose from 148,349 in the 2021-2022 financial year to 153,836 in 2023-2024. This increase is a testament to the government’s commitment to bolstering social welfare programs, providing a robust safety net for its vulnerable populations.

The Fijian government has demonstrated proactive measures to enhance social welfare systems, aiming to secure a more inclusive and supportive society. Efforts include initiatives like the Welfare Graduation Program, which pairs financial aid with tools, training, and small business support, designed to help recipients move toward self-reliance.

Such commitment not only ensures immediate relief for those in need but also creates pathways for long-term economic resilience and empowerment. Through sustained support and strategic planning, Fiji’s social protection landscape continues to evolve, promising a hopeful future for its citizens amidst ongoing economic challenges.
