The latest annual report from Fiji’s Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Protection reveals that the Northern Division led the country in the number of households benefiting from the Poverty Benefit Scheme for the 2022-2023 financial year. A total of 6,119 households in this region received assistance, exceeding figures from the North West and Central Divisions, which supported 4,723 and 4,514 households, respectively. Across the nation, the scheme aided 24,312 households, adding 3,595 new families while reviewing the eligibility of 3,063 existing beneficiaries.
The significant uptake in the Northern Division underscores the profound socio-economic difficulties such as scarce employment opportunities and limited income-generating avenues faced by families in this area. As a result, the scheme aims to deliver critical financial support to these communities in need.
In the revised budget, the Poverty Benefit Scheme was allocated $35.86 million, utilizing 84 percent of these funds throughout the financial year. Besides the Northern Division, other areas including South Eastern, South West, and Nasinu also received aid, benefiting 3,732, 3,704, and 1,520 households, respectively.
The report sheds light on the growing number of Fijians accessing social welfare aid, with beneficiaries increasing from 148,349 in the 2021-2022 financial year to 153,836 in 2023-2024. This escalation highlights the government’s dedication to enhancing social welfare programs, providing a solid safety net for vulnerable citizens.
Moreover, the Fijian government has undertaken proactive steps to strengthen social welfare systems, aiming for a more inclusive, supportive society. Crucial initiatives like the Welfare Graduation Program combine financial assistance with resources such as training and small business support to help beneficiaries achieve self-sufficiency.
These efforts ensure not just immediate support for those in need, but also forge pathways to long-term economic resilience and empowerment. Through ongoing support and strategic foresight, Fiji’s social protection framework is advancing, offering hope for a brighter future for its people amidst persistent economic hurdles.
