A 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Northern California’s Humboldt County, with the epicenter located just off the coast near Petrolia. This significant seismic event, which occurred at 10:44 a.m. local time, was initially reported as a 6.6 magnitude quake before being upgraded by the US Geological Survey (USGS).
In the aftermath of the quake, a tsunami warning was issued for coastal regions in California and Oregon, reaching as far south as San Francisco. However, this warning was canceled shortly before noon as authorities determined that no tsunami danger existed for the affected areas. Approximately 5.3 million residents were initially under the tsunami warning, highlighting the potential reach of the seismic activity.
The earthquake’s nature was classified as “primarily strike-slip,” meaning it involved horizontal movement of tectonic plates, which is less likely to generate a tsunami compared to vertical shifts. There were at least 40 recorded aftershocks following the main quake, the largest being a 5.0 magnitude event.
Local officials have reported minor damage in various areas. One middle school experienced a gas leak, and cracks were noted in roads. Additionally, about 10,000 residents were without power in the region, and some homes were reported to have shifted from their foundations. Fortunately, there were no reports of serious injuries.
Governor Gavin Newsom has signed a state of emergency declaration, and damage assessments are currently underway. Shake alerts from the USGS’s early warning system reached locations as far north as Lincoln City, Oregon, and as far south as Salinas, California, functioning as intended to notify residents of the impending quake.
With a potential 5% chance of a magnitude 6 or larger aftershock in the coming week, experts advise residents to remain vigilant and prepared for further seismic activity.
While the earthquake posed significant challenges, residents have demonstrated resilience, and the local government is mobilizing resources to ensure safety and recovery.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of preparedness for natural disasters, encouraging individuals to review their earthquake emergency kits and plans.
