Communities in northern Arizona have been grappling with the effects of the Dragon Bravo Fire for over a month. On Wednesday evening, local residents and fire officials convened to address the fire’s impact on their livelihoods and environment.

Residents from Page and surrounding areas gathered to hear about firefighting strategies and the challenges posed by the current dry conditions, which officials described as unprecedented. Jennifer Spitz, a long-time resident, expressed her concern, noting the visibility of multiple wildfires from her home this year.

Tourism is a vital economic driver for these communities, and Spitz highlighted the potential downturn as visitors choose to avoid the area due to the ongoing fire. She pointed out that the impacts extend beyond Page, affecting nearby towns like Kanab and Fredonia, which rely heavily on visitors exploring local parks.

Despite a recent improvement in air quality with reduced smoke in Page, ash continues to fall, raising concerns among residents. Shelley Johnstone, who owns a pet grooming and boarding business, reported a decline in clientele as pet owners are hesitant to expose their animals to the smoke.

Residents are anxious for a resolution, with many questioning when the fire will be fully contained. Spitz voiced concerns about the long-term effects on local watersheds and potential changes to river rafting in Colorado, as well as the risk of flash flooding following the fire’s devastation.

On a positive note, fire officials announced the reopening of the Kaibab National Forest north of Highway 89, along with the availability of small business loans for those affected by the fire. This support may help local businesses recover and thrive in the aftermath of the disaster.

While the challenges are significant, the community continues to come together, showing resilience and hope for recovery.
