As icy conditions threaten parts of Northeast Ohio, the National Weather Service (NWS) in Cleveland has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for several counties, effective until 10 a.m. GEAUGA COUNTY is among those alerted, along with Ashtabula, Lake, Portage, and Trumbull counties.
The advisory warns that untreated surfaces, including roads, bridges, overpasses, sidewalks, and parking lots, are likely to become slick and hazardous due to freezing rain. The NWS has indicated possible ice accumulations of up to 0.05 inches in some areas.
3News’ Senior Meteorologist Matt Wintz noted that while this weather event might not escalate into a major issue, the risk on untreated surfaces is significant. “Keep an eye out on some of those side roads. There may be a little glaze of ice on it, so take it a little slow this morning,” Wintz commented.
The freezing temperatures, particularly east of Cleveland, contribute to this situation. With surface temperatures hovering around 31 degrees, any rain that falls will immediately freeze upon contact with the ground.
Drivers are advised to exercise caution, maintaining a slower speed and being mindful of potential slippery spots. For pedestrians, the NWS recommends being cautious when stepping out, particularly on stairs, sidewalks, and driveways, as these surfaces may pose an increased risk of falls and injuries.
Residents are encouraged to take necessary precautions as they navigate their morning routines, ensuring safety in the face of icy conditions.
