The Northeast is set to endure sweltering heat that may challenge daily temperature records as this week wraps up on Friday. Following this extreme weather, hot and humid conditions are expected to persist into early next week, but relief is on the horizon.

On Friday, temperatures are forecasted to reach the mid to upper 90s along the Interstate 95 corridor, impacting areas from southern New England to Virginia. However, parts of upstate New York and northern New England may see temperatures remain in the upper 70s to 80s. The National Weather Service has issued heat advisories and some extreme heat warnings as humidity levels are projected to drive heat indices above 100 degrees.

In addition to the heat, there is a possibility of strong to severe thunderstorms from Boston to New York City and Philadelphia on Friday afternoon, with damaging wind gusts being the primary concern.

It is crucial to recognize the dangers posed by heat, which is known to be the leading weather-related cause of fatalities in the U.S. each year. Those without access to air conditioning, especially in urban areas, are particularly vulnerable. Individuals are advised to check on family members and friends, especially the elderly and those with chronic illnesses. To stay safe, it’s recommended to minimize outdoor activities during the peak heat hours, stay hydrated, and wear lightweight clothing.

Fortunately, cooler temperatures and lower humidity are expected this weekend along the I-95 corridor from New York to New England, especially on Saturday. Although relief in the mid-Atlantic will be modest, with temperatures dropping 5 to 10 degrees, a more oppressive humidity level will return on Sunday. Next week is likely to bring another round of heat followed by a stronger cold front, which should usher in significantly cooler temperatures in the 70s and low 80s, providing further respite to the region.

Overall, while the immediate forecast appears challenging, the anticipated drop in temperatures and humidity offers a hopeful outlook for residents in the Northeast.
