Governor Josh Stein of North Carolina has the ordered U.S. and North Carolina flags at state facilities to be flown at half-staff starting immediately until the interment of former U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney, who passed away on Monday.

Dick Cheney, who served as the 46th Vice President under President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2009, had an extensive career in public service. Prior to his vice presidency, he was the 17th U.S. Secretary of Defense under President George H.W. Bush from 1989 to 1993. His political journey also included roles as the White House Chief of Staff for President Gerald Ford from 1975 to 1977 and as a U.S. Representative for Wyoming’s at-large congressional district from 1979 to 1989.

Once details regarding funeral services are released, a follow-up announcement regarding flags will be issued.

“Vice President Dick Cheney served this country for decades,” Governor Stein remarked. “Anna and I are praying for his family in this time of mourning. May his memory be a blessing.”

All individuals and institutions—including businesses, schools, municipalities, and various government entities—are encouraged to participate in this tribute by flying flags at half-staff during this period.

North Carolina’s flag announcements follow regulations set forth in the U.S. Flag Code, ensuring that proper protocol is observed during this moment of remembrance.
