Governor Josh Stein declared a state of emergency on Thursday in anticipation of a winter storm expected to impact North Carolina over the weekend. This declaration is distinct from the one issued ahead of last weekend’s ice storm, allowing the state to qualify for federal assistance if needed and to activate the State Emergency Response Team in response to the impending inclement weather.

With forecasts predicting over three inches of snow for central North Carolina, Stein urged residents to stay off the roads starting Friday night to ensure safety and ease the burden on emergency responders. “If you can stay off the roads, you’re going to make their jobs a whole lot easier, a lot safer and you will be safe as well,” Stein stated, emphasizing the importance of public safety during adverse weather conditions.

The governor expressed optimism, noting that this storm is expected to bring snow rather than ice, which he described as a “good thing.” He also pointed out that the timing of the storm, coinciding with the weekend, should help mitigate traffic issues typically observed during the weekdays.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is already taking proactive measures by brining roads in advance of the storm. Stein indicated that while the state anticipates fewer power outages than experienced during last weekend’s icy weather, outages may still occur, highlighting the ongoing need for caution.

During the briefing, Stein commended the dedication of NCDOT workers who have been tirelessly preparing for the winter weather. “These guys have been working for about a week and a half, almost nonstop… They are dedicated. They are working their tails off,” he remarked.

Furthermore, North Carolina Emergency Management Director Will Ray mentioned the possibility of seeking additional federal funding for areas severely affected by last weekend’s storm. Stein expressed satisfaction with the White House’s support, indicating a readiness to tackle the challenges posed by the upcoming weather event.

As the state gears up for the winter storm, officials remain focused on ensuring the safety and well-being of North Carolina residents. With continued preparedness and community cooperation, the state aims to navigate this winter weather effectively.
