Christopher Nolan is hard at work on his latest project, “The Odyssey,” an ambitious adaptation of Homer’s classic epic poem. Slated for release in summer 2026, the film is being produced by Universal Pictures, who tantalizingly described it as “a mythic action epic shot across the world.” This project promises to be groundbreaking, as it will utilize new IMAX film technology for its visuals, marking the first time a feature film has been shot entirely with IMAX cameras.
Nolan is collaborating with longtime partner Emma Thomas on this project, continuing their successful history together, which includes the acclaimed film “Oppenheimer.” The couple has been married since 1997 and has four children.
With the premiere date set for July 17, 2026, details about the cast have started to emerge. Matt Damon has been officially announced as Odysseus, the film’s protagonist and king of Ithaca. This role will see Damon reunite with Nolan for the third time, following their collaborations in “Oppenheimer” and “Interstellar.” A star-studded cast is anticipated, featuring actors such as Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, and Charlize Theron, among others. Holland, who will portray Telemachus, son of Odysseus, recently expressed his excitement about working on “The Odyssey,” describing it as the “job of a lifetime.”
Filming is currently underway in various breathtaking locations around the world, including Morocco, Scotland, and Greece. Reports indicate that Damon and Holland were seen filming in the scenic Burghead along Scotland’s Moray Firth coast, demonstrating the film’s global cinematic scope. Other notable filming spots include the island of Favignana off Sicily and several locations in the United Kingdom.
Earlier this year, audiences were given a glimpse of “The Odyssey” through a teaser that was shown before Universal’s “Jurassic World Rebirth.” The trailer features a mix of captivating visuals of the ocean and narrations about Odysseus’ challenges during and after the Trojan War, suggesting a dramatic and immersive account of this timeless story.
Homer’s “The Odyssey,” composed in the 8th century BC, chronicles the arduous journey of Odysseus as he strives to return home from the Trojan War. His path is fraught with mythical creatures, divine encounters, and tests of strength, ultimately leading to a memorable reunion with his wife Penelope and son Telemachus.
From what has been unveiled so far, “The Odyssey” appears to be not just a retelling of a beloved epic but a fresh interpretation that aims to push the boundaries of filmmaking technology and storytelling. Nolan’s reputation for crafting thought-provoking cinema suggests that this film could offer audiences a uniquely engaging experience next summer.
