Christopher Nolan’s next film following the success of Oppenheimer will be an adaptation of the epic poem, “The Odyssey,” attributed to Homer. Universal Pictures, which is producing the film, announced via social media that “The Odyssey” will be a grand action adventure shot globally, utilizing innovative Imax film technology. The film is slated for release in July 2026.

The announcement of this new project surfaced in October, coinciding with news that Tom Holland, known for his role as Spider-Man, is in talks to star alongside Matt Damon. Nolan has opted to remain with Universal after parting ways with Warner Bros., which altered its exclusive theatrical distribution strategy during the Covid pandemic.

Joining the cast are Anne Hathaway and Zendaya, both of whom bring a wealth of talent to the project. Hathaway expressed her appreciation for Nolan, recalling how he offered her a substantial role in his acclaimed sci-fi film, Interstellar, during a challenging time when her online identity was struggling due to negativity.

Nolan has a history of utilizing the expansive Imax format in his earlier films such as The Dark Knight Rises, Interstellar, and Dunkirk, emphasizing his enthusiasm for large-scale cinematic experiences.

While adaptations of “The Odyssey” are rare, there have been notable film interpretations. One of the most recognized is the 1954 film Ulysses, featuring Kirk Douglas. More recent adaptations include Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche in The Return, as well as the Coen brothers’ 2000 film, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, which draws inspiration from the narrative of the epic poem.

This new adaptation of “The Odyssey” presents a thrilling opportunity for audiences to explore this timeless story through Nolan’s distinctive lens, promising a visually captivating experience that pays homage to a classic work of literature.
