PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The No. 4 UConn men’s basketball team showcased their resilience by overcoming an 11-point deficit late in the game to triumph over Providence with a thrilling 103-98 overtime victory on Wednesday night at the Amica Mutual Pavilion. This win marked UConn’s 11th consecutive victory and extended their winning streak against the Friars to seven games.
In a historic performance, four Huskies scored at least 20 points, a feat never before accomplished in the program’s modern history. The team’s 18 three-pointers set a new single-game record, surpassing the previous mark of 17 against Xavier. Braylon Mullins led the scoring with 24 points, hitting six of his ten attempts from beyond the arc, while Silas Demary Jr. had a standout double-double with 23 points and a career-high 15 assists, the most by a UConn player in nearly 21 years. Alex Karaban and Tarris Reed Jr. contributed 23 and 20 points, respectively.
Providence initially controlled the game, establishing a double-digit lead in the first half and maintaining a 10-point advantage by halftime. UConn struggled to find their rhythm for much of the second half, trailing by as many as 13 points. However, a late surge led by Karaban and Reed Jr. sparked a remarkable 14-3 run, tying the game at 89-89 to force overtime.
In the extra period, UConn seized control with timely scoring from Mullins and steady play that prevented Providence from regaining the lead. Demary Jr. secured the victory with a decisive jumper in the final seconds, capping off a game that underscored the Huskies’ depth and determination.
Statistically, UConn shot 49.3 percent from the field and 56.3 percent from three-point range, achieving a remarkable performance amid thrilling competition. Meanwhile, Providence fought valiantly, achieving its best shooting percentage against UConn this season.
With this victory, UConn improved its all-time record against Providence to 52-31 and continues to build momentum as they maintain an undefeated road record this season.
Looking ahead, the Huskies will host DePaul on Saturday, January 10, with hopes of extending their winning streak further and adding more highlights to what has been an impressive season thus far.
