On a night dedicated to quarterback Drew Brees, another player catching the spotlight is Bo Nix, the quarterback Sean Payton aims to develop into a talent akin to Brees. Nix has achieved a significant milestone, tying a record that has stood since John Elway’s time over 40 years ago.
With four victories in his first seven starts, Nix has matched the Denver Broncos’ franchise record for most wins by a rookie quarterback in a season, a mark previously set by Drew Lock in 2019.
“It means a lot,” Nix said following the Broncos’ 33-10 triumph over the Saints. “You’re talking about one of the greats to ever do it at our organization. It means a lot. You’re in great company. I am not finished. We have a lot in front of us, so I definitely don’t want to stop there. We are going to continue to get better as a team. I am going to continue to grow and learn as a player. Hopefully, we will continue to have wins like this.”
Elway achieved his fourth win in Week 15 back in 1983, wrapping up that season with a 4-7 record. Lock recorded a 4-1 record in his five starts five years ago.
Nix now has ten more opportunities this season to outpace both Elway and Lock. The focus is not on if he can surpass them, but by how much he will distinguish himself.
Next up for the Broncos is a matchup against the Panthers, providing Nix a solid chance to secure his fifth win. Following that contest, the schedule toughens significantly with games against the Ravens, Chiefs, and Falcons.
After an initial 0-2 start, the Broncos have rebounded to win four out of their last five games, bolstered by a strong defense. Nix is also showing marked progress, having completed 16 of his 26 passes for 164 yards in the recent game, in addition to rushing for 75 yards on ten attempts.
While there are still strides to be made before he can emulate Brees, Nix is certainly making a name for himself akin to Elway during his rookie days. The Broncos look to stay in the playoff hunt within the AFC as their season unfolds.
