NIU Shocks No. 5 Notre Dame with 16-14 Upset
September 7, 2024 – South Bend, Indiana – Northern Illinois University (NIU) achieved a historic milestone with a 16-14 victory over fifth-ranked Notre Dame at Notre Dame Stadium, marking the first time in the school’s history that they have defeated a Top 5 opponent. The previous highest-ranked team the Huskies had beaten was No. 15 Maryland in 2003.
This win is also significant as it represents NIU’s first victory over a ranked non-conference foe since defeating No. 21 Alabama in 2003, and their first win against a ranked team since beating No. 20 Toledo in 2015. Notably, this victory makes NIU the first team from the Mid-American Conference to defeat a Top 5 opponent.
Today’s game was labeled the 19th “Boneyard Win” in NIU history, a term used to denote victories against power conference or ranked teams. The last such win for the Huskies came against Boston College in the previous season.
A standout play in the game came from Antario Brown, whose 83-yard catch and run tied for the eighth-longest pass play in NIU history, marking the longest for the program since 2008. Brown recorded his first career 100-yard receiving game, the first by an NIU running back since Garrett Wolfe in 2006.
Defensively, Cade Haberman made two key blocks during field goal attempts, marking NIU’s first blocks since the 2021 season. The team finished with a total offense advantage over Notre Dame, gaining 388 yards compared to Notre Dame’s 286, while maintaining a perfect turnover record with two interceptions and no fumbles.
In the post-game remarks, NIU’s head coach expressed immense pride in his players for their resilient performance. He emphasized that this win could serve as a turning point for the program, encouraging greater support from fans going forward. He praised the team’s hard work and commitment to building a strong culture within the program.
Quarterback Ethan Hampton described the victory as an unforgettable experience, noting the significance of the early touchdown that set the tone for the game. Special teams player Kanon Woodill celebrated his game-winning kick, expressing gratitude for the team’s support and the moment’s enormity.
The NIU community is celebrating this landmark win as a major achievement, with hopes for continued success in the season ahead.
