Nike Basketball is set to celebrate one of its most significant figures with the launch of George Raveling Week, a multi-day event dedicated to the life and enduring influence of Hall of Fame coach George Raveling. This initiative aims to connect different generations in the sport, highlighting Raveling’s profound impact both on and off the court.
George Raveling, a notable member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, was a pioneer as the first African-American head coach in the Pac-8, now known as the Pac-12. Over his extensive career, he has significantly contributed to coaching, mentorship, and advocacy, shaping the lives of numerous players, coaches, and leaders within the basketball community.
Kicking off the week’s events on Wednesday, January 21, Villanova University will serve as the ideal venue, reflecting Raveling’s strong connection to the institution as both a former player and coach. In collaboration with Mike Tollin, director and producer of the documentary “Unraveling George,” a screening of the film will take place at the Connelly Center prior to its broader release. The event will also feature a panel discussion with Tollin, former Villanova head coach Jay Wright, and longtime Raveling friend and Nike executive Larry Miller. They will discuss the values, relationships, and community aspects that have shaped Raveling’s legacy.
In a further tribute, Villanova’s men’s basketball team will host Georgetown that evening at Finneran Pavilion, where special elements honoring Coach Raveling will be featured throughout the game.
Bridging Raveling’s legacy with the present, Nike has designed a unique “Coach Rav” Book 2 PE, which will be worn by NBA star Devin Booker and shared with select teams linked to Raveling’s journey. Teams participating in the celebrations will also don shooting shirts emblazoned with one of Raveling’s famed quotes: “Aim to leave behind more than you have taken from the world.” Coaches involved in the week’s events will sport custom Air Force 1s to complete their outfits.
The festivities will continue with additional games and celebrations throughout the week, including important matchups on January 28 and January 31, recognizing the profound impact of Coach Raveling in various programs.
This commemorative week not only honors a basketball icon but also aims to inspire current and future generations to understand and embrace the values that Raveling has championed throughout his significant career.
