Nicola Coughlan, known for her role as Penelope in Netflix’s “Bridgerton,” recently opened up to Elle UK magazine about an awkward encounter she had with a drunken fan. The incident occurred in a bathroom where the fan candidly commented on Coughlan’s body, making her feel uncomfortable. Coughlan shared her thoughts on body image and the scrutiny actors face, especially in relation to their physical appearances.
Reflecting on her experience during the filming of the third season of “Bridgerton,” Coughlan revealed she had been exercising regularly and had lost weight, fitting into a size 8 corset while often being labeled as plus size. This contradiction left her bewildered. “How fucked are we that I am the biggest woman you want to see on screen?” she questioned, expressing her frustration over the focus on appearances rather than talent.
The actress has been vocal against body shaming, having previously addressed the issue in an Instagram post from 2022, where she urged people not to share opinions about her body. Coughlan emphasized that what mattered most to her was the quality of her work, not her size: “Bodies change, if I lose weight or gain weight… it’s no one’s business. All I care about is doing good acting.”
In an empowering move, Coughlan embraced her body in front of the camera during a significant scene in “Bridgerton” Season 3. She committed to a fully nude sex scene as a direct response to online trolls, wanting to reclaim her narrative. “It just felt like the biggest ‘fuck you’ to all the conversation surrounding my body; it was amazingly empowering. I felt beautiful in the moment,” she said.
Coughlan’s candid and unapologetic stance on body image encourages others to embrace their own bodies and focus on what truly matters — their craft and personal satisfaction. Her journey serves as an inspiration, reiterating that self-acceptance and confidence can triumph over societal expectations and judgment.
