PHILADELPHIA — Nick Foles made a memorable return to Philadelphia, where he celebrated alongside fans who witnessed his last official pass with the Eagles, a symbolic throw in a dog mask. The occasion was marked by a pregame party, during which Foles and former teammate Fletcher Cox, both wearing German shepherd masks, were introduced as surprise guests by retired center Jason Kelce.
The dog masks originated during the Eagles’ 2017 season, representing the team’s underdog spirit on their journey to victory in Super Bowl LII, where they defeated the New England Patriots. Foles personified this underdog narrative as he stepped in as the starting quarterback for an injured Carson Wentz late in the season, ultimately leading the team to a Super Bowl win while earning MVP honors.
In the championship game, Foles threw for 373 yards and three touchdowns, but it is the famous “Philly Special” play that he is perhaps best known for. On a critical fourth-and-goal play, he executed a trick play that culminated in a touchdown pass, helping the Eagles secure a 41-33 victory.
During a heartfelt 45-minute speech, Foles expressed his gratitude for his family, coaches, and teammates, especially the offensive linemen, whom he referred to as the “true heroes” behind the team’s success. “Stepping into that huddle was such a sense of peace,” he reflected, acknowledging the vital support they provided throughout his career.
Foles, who was drafted by the Eagles in 2012 and had two stints with the team over five years, made significant contributions, including a Pro Bowl selection in 2013. He finished his career with a total of 14,227 passing yards, 82 touchdowns, and 47 interceptions across various teams, with his final game played for the Indianapolis Colts on January 1, 2023.
As he concluded his emotional tribute, Foles thanked the Philadelphia fanbase, highlighting the joy and excitement they bring to the game: “Y’all are what makes this place so special.”
