Former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles, who solidified his legacy as a Philadelphia sports hero by leading the team to victory in Super Bowl LII, is set to retire from professional football as a member of the Eagles in September.
Following extensive reflection, Foles announced his retirement from the NFL through a social media post. “It’s been an incredible 11-year journey filled with unforgettable moments and amazing people. From being drafted by the Eagles to winning the Super Bowl, every step has been a blessing,” he shared.
In a video accompanying his announcement, Foles expressed gratitude to NFL fans globally, with a special mention of the Eagles fans. “You truly made playing in Philadelphia the most special experience in my football career,” he remarked.
Foles will officially retire on September 16, coinciding with the Eagles’ home opener at Lincoln Financial Field against the Atlanta Falcons on Monday Night Football.
Jeffrey Lurie, chairman and CEO of the Philadelphia Eagles, paid tribute to Foles, highlighting his class and integrity on and off the field. “He was the ultimate competitor and a true representative of our city and, of course, a Super Bowl champion. His positive demeanor, approachability, and kindness resonated with everyone, showcasing his great character,” Lurie stated. He congratulated the Foles family on Nick’s illustrious career and retirement.
Drafted by the Eagles in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft, Foles was traded to the St. Louis Rams in 2015. After a stint with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2016, he returned to Philadelphia in 2017 as a backup to Carson Wentz. Following Wentz’s injury that season, Foles stepped in as the starting quarterback, ultimately leading the Eagles to a memorable 41-33 win against the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII.
During the game, Foles orchestrated the legendary “Philly Special” play, becoming the first quarterback in NFL history to catch a touchdown in a Super Bowl. He completed 28 of 43 passes for 373 yards, threw three touchdowns, and was named Super Bowl MVP.
Foles continued his career in Philadelphia until 2019 before being traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars. He later played for the Chicago Bears from 2020 to 2022, and concluded his career with the Indianapolis Colts before being released in 2023.
Fans in South Philadelphia recently reflected on Foles’ impact on the city. “He’s a legend,” said local resident Jennifer Brennan. “We love him. The city loves him, and we’re happy to have him back.” Another fan, Brian Knowles, added, “He had a pretty tough career, but it didn’t really seem to knock him down. It’s really nice to see that he’s going to come back as an Eagle and retire as an Eagle.”
Supporters expressed deep appreciation for Foles’ contributions to the Eagles, with Logan Joyce from Wilmington, Delaware, noting the significance of Foles’ achievement in bringing a Super Bowl to the city, a dream long held by previous generations. “He’ll always be a legend,” Joyce stated. “He’ll always have a special place in my heart.”
