Former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles, who secured his legendary status in the city by leading the team to victory in Super Bowl LII, announced that he will officially retire from professional football as a Philadelphia Eagle in September.
In a heartfelt message on social media, Foles expressed, “After much thought and prayer, I’ve decided to retire from the NFL. It’s been an incredible 11-year journey filled with unforgettable moments and amazing people. From being drafted by the Eagles to winning the Super Bowl, every step has been a blessing.”
Foles took the opportunity to thank NFL fans globally, with a special mention to Eagles supporters, stating, “You truly made playing in Philadelphia the most special experience in my football career.”
His official retirement will take place on September 16, coinciding with the Eagles’ home opener against the Atlanta Falcons during Monday Night Football at Lincoln Financial Field.
Eagles chairman Jeffrey Lurie praised Foles, saying, “Nick Foles always carried himself with the utmost class and integrity. He was the ultimate competitor, an inspiring teammate, a true representative of our city, and of course, a Super Bowl champion. His positive demeanor and kindness toward others speak to his great character.”
Drafted by the Eagles in the third round of the 2012 NFL draft, Foles was traded to the St. Louis Rams in 2015 and spent a season with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2016 before returning to Philadelphia as a backup in 2017. When starter Carson Wentz suffered an injury, Foles stepped up and led the Eagles to a 41-33 victory over Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII, a game where he made history by catching a touchdown pass in a play now known as the “Philly Special.”
Through the game, Foles completed 28 of 43 passes for 373 yards, with three touchdowns and one interception, earning him the title of Super Bowl MVP.
Foles spent his final NFL seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Chicago Bears, and Indianapolis Colts before retiring.
Fans in South Philadelphia shared their thoughts on Foles’ legacy, with one calling him “a legend,” while another expressed gratitude for his role in bringing the Eagles their first Super Bowl title.
