In Toronto, the Maple Leafs are contemplating the addition of defenceman Matt Benning to their lineup for the upcoming game against the New York Islanders. This would mark Benning’s first NHL appearance in two years and is particularly notable as it comes 40 years after his uncle, Jim Benning, was traded by the team. Although the 31-year-old has not played this season, he had a stint with the San Jose Sharks, where he accrued 26 points over 98 games from 2022 to 2024. Transferred to Toronto in exchange for defenceman Timothy Liljegren, Benning expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunity to play, stating, “when the chance comes I’ll be appreciative.”

From Columbus, the Blue Jackets have activated standout defenceman Zach Werenski from injured reserve. Werenski has been sidelined for four games due to a lower-body injury sustained on December 20 against the Anaheim Ducks. The 28-year-old has had an impressive season, scoring 14 goals and 40 points in 35 games, making him the second-highest scoring defenceman in the NHL. Additionally, his average ice time places him among the top players in the league at 26:48 per game. His return is eagerly anticipated as he is also set to represent Team USA at the 2026 Olympic Winter Games. Furthermore, defenceman Dysin Mayo’s emergency recall has been elevated to a regular status.

In Washington, forward Pierre-Luc Dubois has resumed skating after undergoing abdominal surgery on November 9. According to head coach Spencer Carbery, Dubois is progressing well in his recovery, which was initially estimated at a 3-4 month timeline. The 27-year-old has participated in only six games this season and is expected to make his return shortly after the Olympic break in February.

For the Buffalo Sabres, defenceman Michael Kesselring is ruled out for Saturday’s clash with the Blue Jackets due to a lower-body injury. Coach Lindy Ruff confirmed that Kesselring has yet to record a point in 16 games this season. Jacob Bryson is anticipated to step in for Kesselring during his absence.

Lastly, in Chicago, the Blackhawks have assigned forward Dominic Toninato to their AHL affiliate, the Rockford IceHogs. This season, Toninato notched one assist in five games with the Blackhawks and has contributed five goals and 17 points in 25 games with the IceHogs.

The return of key players like Zach Werenski and the potential debut of Matt Benning highlight the dynamic nature of the NHL, as teams adapt and strategize around injuries and roster movements. Fans can remain hopeful for exciting performances as these players rejoin their respective lineups.
