As the Stanley Cup Final progresses, the NHL is celebrating standout performances from the regular season by announcing its award winners ahead of the NHL Award ceremony later this month.
Montreal Canadiens defenseman Lane Hutson has been honored with the Calder Trophy, which recognizes the league’s top rookie. Hutson captured an impressive 165 out of 191 first-place votes, surpassing Calgary Flames goaltender Dustin Wolf and San Jose Sharks forward Macklin Celebrini, who were also finalists for the accolade.
In a historic moment, Hutson became only the fourth defenseman since the 1943-44 season to lead all rookies in points, achieving a remarkable total of 66. He joins an elite group that includes Bobby Orr, Brian Leetch, and Quinn Hughes. Additionally, his 60 assists tie him with Larry Murphy for the most assists by a rookie defenseman in NHL history. This award makes Hutson the third Canadiens player to be honored in the expansion era, following Brendan Gallagher and Ken Dryden.
Another notable recognition went to Florida Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov, who secured his second consecutive Selke Trophy as the league’s top defensive forward. Barkov outperformed his fellow finalists, Anthony Cirelli and Sam Reinhart, demonstrating his exceptional abilities on both sides of the ice. Under his leadership, the Panthers were ranked among the NHL’s top ten for goals against per game and boasted an impressive penalty-killing percentage.
Spencer Carbery, the head coach of the Washington Capitals, was awarded the Jack Adams Award, which acknowledges the coach who has significantly contributed to his team’s success. This recognition comes in just his second season with the Capitals, building on an impressive record and playoff appearances in both years.
The NHL will continue to unveil additional award winners, including the Vezina Trophy and Hart Trophy, during the 2025 NHL Awards ceremony on June 12, coinciding with Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final.
Overall, the recognition of these players and coaches reflects a season filled with hard work and determination, setting a hopeful tone as fans look ahead to future competitions and performances in the league.
