NFP Backs Prasad as He Steps Down Amid FICAC Charges, Coalition Stability in Focus

The National Federation Party (NFP) has expressed its unwavering support for its leader, Professor Biman Chand Prasad, after he voluntarily stepped down from his roles as Deputy Prime Minister and other ministerial positions. This development follows charges brought against him by the Fijian Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) regarding an alleged violation of the Political Parties Act in 2015.

In a statement, NFP President Parmod Chand voiced the party’s complete backing of Professor Prasad during this challenging time, emphasizing the strong support from branches nationwide and from supporters overseas. “This demonstrates yet again why the NFP is an impregnable principled fortress with an indestructible foundation laid 62 years ago,” he affirmed.

Chand also took a moment to thank the Prime Minister for his understanding and support throughout this situation, reaffirming the NFP’s dedication to the stability and success of the Coalition Government, consistent with the principles of their Coalition agreement. He described the current moment as a “testing time,” but expressed confidence that integrity and justice would prevail. According to him, Professor Prasad has consistently demonstrated honor, humility, and dedication to the Fijian people.

In terms of future plans, the NFP’s Management Board is scheduled to meet in mid-November to outline their next steps and to reiterate their commitment to serving the people of Fiji.

This situation follows earlier discussions from Professor Prasad about the NFP’s commitment to its coalition partners and the importance of maintaining a stable political alliance despite challenges. His prior statements highlighted the party’s longstanding history of resilience in Fijian politics and their commitment to uphold democratic principles.

Amidst challenges, Prasad’s leadership has continually inspired confidence among NFP members and supporters, and this steadfastness is expected to guide the party through current trials while keeping a hopeful outlook as they aim for future successes in governance and national development.
