NFP Backs Prasad as He Steps Down Amid FICAC Charges, Coalition Stability in Focus

NFP backs Prasad as FICAC allegations test Fiji’s coalition stability

The National Federation Party (NFP) has publicly reaffirmed its support for leader Professor Biman Chand Prasad after he voluntarily resigned from his positions as Deputy Prime Minister and other ministerial roles. This decision comes in light of allegations made against him by the Fijian Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) regarding a purported breach of the Political Parties Act dating back to 2015.

NFP President Parmod Chand issued a statement reinforcing the party’s solidarity with Professor Prasad at this challenging juncture. He highlighted the strong backing from both local branches and international supporters, asserting, “This demonstrates yet again why the NFP is an impregnable principled fortress with an indestructible foundation laid 62 years ago.”

Chand also expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for his understanding and support during this time, reinforcing the NFP’s commitment to the stability and success of the Coalition Government in accordance with their Coalition agreement. He acknowledged this moment as a “testing time” but expressed confidence that principles of integrity and justice would ultimately prevail. Chand commended Professor Prasad for his consistent display of honor, humility, and devotion to the Fijian populace.

Looking ahead, the NFP’s Management Board is slated to convene in mid-November to discuss the party’s next steps and reaffirm their dedication to serving the people of Fiji. This recent situation coincides with Professor Prasad’s prior discussions emphasizing the significance of maintaining cooperation among coalition partners and sustaining a stable political alliance despite adversities. He has consistently underscored the party’s historic resilience in Fijian politics and dedication to democratic values.

Despite the ongoing challenges, Professor Prasad’s leadership has continued to inspire confidence among NFP members and supporters. This steadfastness is expected to help guide the party through current trials while fostering a hopeful outlook aimed at future governance and national development. As the NFP navigates through these complexities, their commitment to uphold the integrity of their leadership and the values they represent remains a positive beacon for the party’s future.
