NFL wide receiver Rashee Rice has pleaded guilty to two felony charges related to a high-speed hit-and-run incident that took place on a Dallas highway last year, affecting at least four individuals. As part of a plea deal reached on Thursday, Rice, 25, admitted to third-degree felony charges of collision involving serious bodily injury and racing on a highway causing bodily injury. The more severe charges against him were dismissed, according to his attorney, Texas Sen. Royce West.
The incident occurred on March 30, 2024, when Rice was driving a 2020 Lamborghini Urus SUV during rush hour on Central Expressway. Authorities reported that he reached speeds of 119 mph shortly before colliding with multiple vehicles. Following the crash, Rice fled the scene without checking on the well-being of those involved, sparking significant legal backlash.
As part of his sentence, Rice will serve 30 days in Dallas County Jail and will be under five years of deferred probation. Additionally, he has been ordered to pay restitution amounting to $115,481.91 to cover the medical expenses of his victims. During a news conference, Rice expressed remorse for his actions, urging the public to prioritize road safety. He emphasized the importance of following speed limits and driving responsibly.
Dallas County District Attorney John Creuzot acknowledged Rice’s public platform and the potential dangers of reckless driving. He expressed hope that Rice will grow from this experience and use it as a lesson for others.
Rice’s legal troubles do not end here, as he is also facing at least two civil lawsuits related to the crash. Furthermore, he recently suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 4 of the NFL season but is expected to make a full recovery in time for the 2025 season. Although the NFL has yet to announce any disciplinary actions related to the incident, it is anticipated that Rice could face a multi-game suspension.
