INDIANAPOLIS — The NFL Scouting Combine, often labeled the “underwear Olympics,” is a subject of debate among fans and analysts alike. However, for many, including myself, it remains an essential event filled with value. Legendary NFL scout C.O. Brocato once said, “Those who don’t value the combine don’t know how to properly use it.”

With this year’s combine featuring 318 NFL prospects, all eager to prove themselves, I’m particularly focused on 21 individuals whose performances could potentially shift draft rankings and expectations.

One standout is Brenen Thompson, a wide receiver from Mississippi State, who I predict will clock the fastest 40-yard dash this year. Although he stands at just 5 feet, 9 inches and weighs around 170 pounds, his explosive speed—evident from his high school 10.18-second 100-meter dash—makes him a formidable player. Thompson recorded five 50-plus yard receptions in 2025 and could see that number increase significantly with better quarterback play, with a projected 40 time of 4.28 seconds.

Another promising prospect is Carnell Tate from Ohio State, who is currently viewed as the potential first wide receiver to be drafted. His long strides provide deceptive speed, and he is expected to run in the 4.4s during the combine.

Dillon Thieneman, a safety from Oregon, possesses the versatility to excel both in deep coverage and run defense. His performance in athletic testing will be pivotal to ascertaining his value as a top-25 pick. Similarly, Akheem Mesidor, another edge rusher from Miami, saw his stock rise due to his impressive season. Scouts are keen to observe his testing results, especially in light of his injury history.

Ty Simpson, the quarterback from Alabama, finds himself at a crucial juncture where he could be drafted anywhere between 13th to 53rd. His combine week will be vital for him to confirm his physique and health status while demonstrating his skills during the quarterback workouts.

Other prospects capturing attention include Zachariah Branch from USC, noted for his potential in the 40-yard dash, and Domani Jackson from Alabama, who’s recovering from a significant knee injury that halted his trajectory as a five-star athlete.

The combine will also serve as a critical testing ground for players like Mike Washington from Arkansas, who has evolved from being viewed as undraftable to a promising player after a strong 2025 season, and Keylan Rutledge from Georgia Tech, whose recovery from serious injuries will be closely monitored.

A combination of athletic testing, medical evaluation, and personal interviews will shape the trajectories of these prospects. The Scouting Combine provides an invaluable platform for many to transform potential into reality and to showcase their abilities in front of key decision-makers in the NFL. This year’s event is poised to impact the draft class significantly, sparking hope for both emerging talents and established teams looking to strengthen their rosters.
