The National Fire Authority (NFA) has issued a warning to the community to be extra cautious and vigilant in preventing fires as the new year unfolds, following the first fire incident of 2026. This alert comes after a three-bedroom lean-to house in Tacirua was destroyed by flames on January 3.

NFA Acting Chief Executive Officer Joel Israel reported that the incident was first communicated to the Command Centre via emergency number 910 at 3:01 PM. Fire crews from the Suva Fire Station quickly responded, with the first unit arriving on the scene by 3:12 PM. Upon their arrival, firefighters discovered that the house was completely engulfed in flames. They utilized multiple hoses and water supplies from their trucks to combat the fire, successfully extinguishing it by 4:22 PM. Unfortunately, the structure sustained an estimated 99 percent damage, but firefighters managed to prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent properties, and there were no reported injuries.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Mr. Israel emphasized the importance of fire safety as New Year celebrations continue and the school year approaches. He urged the public to practice fire safety measures, such as never leaving cooking unattended, keeping flammable materials away from heat sources, and regularly checking electrical wiring to prevent overloading power outlets.

Additionally, he recommended that families store matches and lighters out of the reach of children and develop an emergency plan that everyone understands in case of a fire. Last year, the NFA recorded 186 property fires resulting in over 90 percent damage, with electrical faults being the leading cause, followed by incendiary-related incidents and suspected arson.

“Fire safety starts with individuals doing the right thing by being vigilant and self-aware,” Mr. Israel stated. The NFA continues to remind the public to dial 910 immediately in the event of a fire, emphasizing that prompt action can save lives and protect property. This proactive approach by the NFA highlights the essential role of community awareness and preparedness in ensuring safety during the New Year period.
