Newsboys in Turmoil: Shocking Allegations Rock Christian Music Scene

Contemporary Christian Music group Newsboys is facing a difficult moment following serious allegations against their former lead singer, Michael Tait. After Tait’s unexpected departure from the band in January, The Roys Report published findings from a lengthy investigation spanning over two years. The report claims to have gathered testimonies from more than 50 sources, including accusations from three individuals who allege that Tait groomed and sexually assaulted them during his career, particularly between 2004 and 2014. Furthermore, multiple sources in the report assert that Tait was involved in drug use.

In light of these disturbing allegations, the current members of Newsboys—Jeff Frankenstein, Jody Davis, Duncan Phillips, and Adam Agee—expressed their shock and heartbreak in a public Instagram post. They emphasized their support for the victims, urging anyone who has been affected to come forward. Their statement acknowledged the personal impact of these allegations, noting their roles as husbands and fathers and the sacrifices their families have made for their musical mission. They expressed profound disappointment and a sense of betrayal over the revelations, stating, “We are horrified, heartbroken and angry at this report and in many ways, we feel as if we and our families have been deceived for the past fifteen years.”

Michael Tait has yet to publicly respond to the allegations reported, and efforts to reach him or his representatives for comment have been unsuccessful. When Tait stepped down from his role earlier this year, he mentioned the difficulty of his decision, describing it as a “monumental and heartfelt” choice made amidst prayer and introspection.

Tait, who was a significant figure as the lead singer of Newsboys since 2009, is also known for his earlier success as part of the influential CCM group DC Talk, which produced hits like “Jesus Freak” and reached a wide audience in the 1990s.

This situation has sparked important conversations about accountability in the music industry, especially concerning the treatment of victims. It serves as a reminder of the need for transparency and support for those who come forward with allegations.

While the allegations are deeply troubling, they also present an opportunity for growth and change within the community, emphasizing the importance of standing up against abuse and supporting those who have been harmed.
