New Zealand and Palau have taken significant steps towards enhancing their collaborative efforts on regional issues in the Pacific, according to Foreign Minister Winston Peters. This partnership comes as both nations prepare to host the upcoming Pacific Islands Forum, underscoring the importance of unity and cooperation in addressing shared challenges.

During his visit to Koror, Palau, Peters engaged in high-level discussions with President Surangel Whipps Jr., Minister of State Gustav Aitaro, and other Cabinet members. The conversations focused on New Zealand’s readiness to support Palau as it hosts this year’s Forum. Peters emphasized the goal of maximizing the benefits of the two upcoming Forums to attract support from development partners that align with Pacific priorities.

“The region faces a very challenging global strategic environment, and in this context, Pacific countries best advance our shared interests when we work together, showing strength through unity,” Peters noted, highlighting the critical nature of collaboration in tackling shared issues.

The discussions not only addressed the strategic leadership roles of both countries, but also delved into pressing topics such as ocean health, fisheries management, and economic resilience — all of which transcend national borders. Peters reiterated the significance of a unified voice in the Forum, which lends authority to small nations in the global arena.

Furthermore, Peters highlighted the importance of environmental protection, noting that the ocean is central to Pacific livelihoods. He reaffirmed New Zealand’s commitment to supporting Palau’s initiative in protecting ocean resources, as demonstrated by the announcement of a year-long extension of financial support for the Office of the Pacific Ocean Commissioner, amounting to NZ$1.1 million.

His travels will continue in Nadi, Fiji, where he plans to meet with his Fijian counterpart and other key officials, strengthening regional ties further. This collaboration signifies a hopeful outlook for the future of the Pacific Islands, as nations come together to confront their challenges and secure a sustainable environment for generations to come.
