Securing a reservation at New York’s popular restaurants has become increasingly difficult, reaching new heights of inaccessibility in recent years. Joel Montaniel, CEO of the booking platform Sevenrooms, noted that some restaurants have become virtually impossible to enter. He mentioned that when he consulted restaurateurs for advice on getting reservations, many admitted they lacked strategies to help.

In response to rising competition for dinner reservations, the New York state legislature recently voted to prohibit third-party booking sites, such as Appointment Trader, where users were reselling restaurant bookings for exorbitant prices. This practice was previously more common for concert and event tickets.

Melissa Fleischut, President & CEO of the New York State Restaurant Association, hailed the new legislation as a significant win for the hospitality sector. She believes it will diminish competition for reservations and provide protection to restaurants from costly no-shows.

Despite these legislative efforts, the demand for unique, fashionable, and luxurious dining experiences continues to outpace availability. Travel advisor Jaclyn Sienna India pointed out that since the COVID-19 pandemic, nearly every travel-related sector is fully booked, complicating the process of securing reservations for eager diners.

She observed a shift away from fine dining, with fewer clients expressing interest in lengthy tasting menus. Instead, the trend has moved toward trendy establishments where the appeal lies more in the experience than the food itself. For many patrons, the driving factor has become the social status associated with dining at in-demand locations.
