In response to rising competition for dinner reservations, the New York state legislature recently voted to prohibit third-party booking sites, such as Appointment Trader, where users were reselling restaurant bookings for exorbitant prices. Melissa Fleischut, President & CEO of the New York State Restaurant Association, hailed the new legislation as a significant win for the hospitality sector. She believes it will diminish competition for reservations and provide protection to restaurants from costly no-shows.

For many patrons, the driving factor has become the social status associated with dining at in-demand locations.
