Joel Montaniel, the CEO of the booking platform Sevenrooms, stated that some restaurants have become virtually inaccessible. He noted that even restaurateurs have admitted they lack effective strategies to secure a table during discussions at industry panels.

The competition for dinner reservations has intensified to such an extent that, last month, the New York state legislature passed a law banning third-party booking platforms like Appointment Trader, which allowed users to resell their restaurant reservations for prices exceeding $200, a practice similar to scalping tickets for concerts and sporting events.

Melissa Fleischut, President and CEO of the New York State Restaurant Association, characterized the legislation as a significant win for the hospitality sector, aimed at lowering reservation competition and shielding restaurants from costly cancellations.

Despite these legislative efforts, the reality remains that the demand for unique, trendy, and luxurious experiences continues to exceed their availability. Travel advisor Jaclyn Sienna India highlighted this situation, pointing out that since the pandemic, there has been a noticeable increase in bookings across all sectors, including flights, hotels, and restaurants.
