Obtaining a reservation at restaurants in New York City has become increasingly difficult over the past three years, making it a challenging endeavor for many dining enthusiasts. Joel Montaniel, CEO of the booking platform Sevenrooms, remarked that there are some establishments that remain perpetually out of reach. Many restaurateurs, when asked for tips on securing reservations, have admitted they lack any.

The situation has escalated to the point where New York’s state legislature passed a measure last month banning third-party booking services, such as Appointment Trader, which allowed users to resell restaurant reservations for considerable sums—sometimes $200 or more. This practice mirrored the scalping typically seen in concerts and sports events.

Melissa Fleischut, President & CEO of the New York State Restaurant Association, labeled the new legislation a significant win for the restaurant industry, aimed at reducing reservation competition and protecting establishments from costly no-shows.

Despite these legislative efforts, the growing demand for innovative and upscale dining options continues to exceed their availability. Travel advisor Jaclyn Sienna India noted the trend since the pandemic, highlighting that nearly all travel-related services—flights, accommodations, and dining—are fully booked.
