Obtaining a dining reservation in New York has become increasingly difficult in recent years, with the process evolving from a challenge to an almost insurmountable task for many food enthusiasts. Over the past three years, securing a seat at the city’s most popular eateries has become nearly impossible.

Joel Montaniel, CEO of the booking platform Sevenrooms, shared insights with Bloomberg about this growing issue, stating that some restaurants have become inaccessible. He noted that when he has asked restaurateurs for tips on securing a reservation, many have expressed they don’t have any strategies to share.

The competitiveness of dinner reservations reached a tipping point recently, prompting the New York state legislature to pass a ban on third-party booking sites like Appointment Trader, where users were reselling reservations for upwards of $200. This practice, akin to ticket scalping for concerts and sports events, has drawn considerable attention.

Melissa Fleischut, President & CEO of the New York State Restaurant Association, characterized the new legislation as a significant win for the hospitality sector, aimed at reducing competition over reservations and protecting restaurants from costly cancellations.

Despite these legislative changes, the demand for high-end, trendy experiences continues to exceed their availability. Travel advisor Jaclyn Sienna India highlighted this issue, reflecting on a post-COVID landscape where nearly all travel accommodations are fully booked.
