In New York City, securing a restaurant reservation has become increasingly difficult, with the process evolving from a challenge to nearly impossible for many food enthusiasts. Over the past three years, diners have faced unprecedented hurdles in booking tables at the city’s most sought-after eateries.

Joel Montaniel, CEO of the reservation platform Sevenrooms, noted that some restaurants have become virtually inaccessible. He stated that even restaurateurs, when asked for advice on securing a reservation, admit they have none to offer.

Last month, the New York state legislature took action against the surge in competitive bookings by voting to ban third-party reservation platforms like Appointment Trader, where users resold restaurant reservations for $200 or more. This practice, likened to ticket scalping for concerts and sporting events, had become a major issue.

Melissa Fleischut, President and CEO of the New York State Restaurant Association, hailed the new legislation as a significant win for the hospitality sector, aiming to lessen reservation competition and protect restaurants from costly cancellations.

Despite these legislative efforts, the demand for upscale dining experiences continues to exceed supply. Travel advisor Jaclyn Sienna India highlighted that post-pandemic, reservations for restaurants, flights, and hotels are consistently full, making it challenging to secure desirable spots.
