New York has stepped up to assist Massachusetts in the wake of the Blizzard of 2026, which dumped over three feet of snow across various parts of the state. This collaborative effort comes despite the historic rivalry between New York City and Boston, as officials prioritize the needs of their neighboring state.

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey expressed her gratitude on social media for the support offered by New York Governor Kathy Hochul, thanking her for sending equipment to help with snow removal operations. “When winter hits hard, New York and Massachusetts are on the same team. Game Day? That’s a different story,” Healey wrote.

The New York State Department of Transportation has deployed a significant amount of snow removal resources, sending 74 workers along with various pieces of heavy equipment, including ten large dump trucks, twelve patrol trucks, and twelve loaders. “When our neighbors call, NY answers. Crews from across the state are deploying to assist @MassDOT with blizzard cleanup after some areas received 37 inches of snow,” the Department stated.

Meanwhile, the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency has requested additional aid for snow removal, and equipment from Vermont has already arrived to assist in the efforts.

The blizzard has left about 165,000 customers in Massachusetts without power, especially concentrated on Cape Cod. Utility companies have warned that it may take several days to restore electricity in the affected areas.

Many roads, particularly in southeastern Massachusetts, remain unplowed and impassable due to the heavy snowfall, with Fall River managing to clear 41 inches of snow thus far. As Massachusetts continues to grapple with difficult winter conditions, additional snowfall was reported on Wednesday, with further accumulation expected later in the week.

Despite this challenging weather, the spirit of cooperation among neighboring states highlights the strength of community support in times of crisis. The continued efforts of local crews and assistance from New York reflect a hopeful and positive example of solidarity in overcoming the impacts of severe winter storms.
