Members of the Korovalewa Cooperative Ltd in Nasama Village, Nadroga, celebrated the arrival of a brand-new tractor aimed at boosting their farming production. The cooperative, which consists of 18 members, expressed their gratitude towards the Ministry of Agriculture’s farm mechanization program for this valuable support.
Minister Tomasi Tunabuna highlighted that this assistance demonstrates the Government’s commitment to fostering the transition of rural farmers towards commercial agriculture. He stated, “Mechanization is a critical enabler of agricultural growth.” By aiding cooperatives like Korovalewa, the government is empowering farmers to save time, reduce operational costs, and enhance the efficiency of their farming practices.
With members boasting 10 to 40 years of agricultural experience, the Korovalewa Cooperative has been operational for the past two years, managing 55 acres of land, including 30 acres of arable land. Minister Tunabuna also praised the cooperative for including young farmers among its ranks, viewing this engagement as a promising indicator for the future of agriculture in Fiji. He remarked, “It is encouraging to see young people actively involved in farming. The youths are our future — their participation ensures the continuity of agriculture as a sustainable livelihood.”
Cooperative president Iliesa Hanimo noted that the acquisition of the tractor represents a significant milestone for the group and a testament to their progress since forming the cooperative. This development not only marks an important step for the cooperative but also signals hope for the broader farming community in the region. The investment in modern farming equipment is expected to enhance productivity and encourage more efficient farming practices, ultimately contributing to the sustainability and growth of agriculture in Fiji.
