The much-anticipated spinoff pilot of FX’s hit series “Snowfall,” led by actors Gail Bean and Isaiah John, continues to expand its cast. Joining Bean and John are Asante Blackk, Peyton Alex Smith, and Simmie Sims III, all of whom will play series regular roles. However, specific details regarding their characters remain undisclosed as the production keeps a tight lid on information.

Set in Los Angeles during the 1990s and positioned shortly after the events of the original series, the pilot’s narrative will follow a recovering addict, portrayed by Bean, as she aims to elevate West Coast rap to mainstream popularity amid the backdrop of a violent gang conflict.

The spinoff has been in development for a couple of years, with its initial announcement made prior to the conclusion of “Snowfall” in 2023. Originally, Bean was the only confirmed member attached to the project, but John’s involvement was later solidified. John was a key character in the original series from the start, while Bean joined in Season 2, ultimately being promoted to a series regular in its final season.

Asante Blackk, who garnered acclaim for his performance in Ava DuVernay’s “When They See Us,” is set to appear in the upcoming third season of “Euphoria.” Peyton Alex Smith recently concluded his lead role in “All American: Homecoming,” which itself is a spinoff of “All American,” and is known for his work in “Legacies,” another spinoff from “The Vampire Diaries.” Meanwhile, Simmie Sims III, who also performs under the stage name Buddy, is making his significant acting debut. He is a musician signed by Pharrell Williams and has collaborated with prominent artists including Kendrick Lamar and Miley Cyrus. His previous television roles include appearances in “Rap Sh!t” and “Bel-Air.”

The pilot is being written by Malcolm Spellman, who is also an executive producer alongside “Snowfall” showrunner Dave Andron and others, including Thomas Schlamme, Julie DeJoie, Michael London, and Trevor Engelson. FX Productions is handling the development of the series.

This spinoff holds exciting potential, promising to explore a new dimension of storytelling within the world of “Snowfall.” With a talented cast and an experienced production team, fans can anticipate engaging narratives rooted in the cultural landscape of 90s Los Angeles.
