Queen Victoria School athletics coach Ratu Meli Romuakalou is determined to strengthen the school’s athletics program despite facing various challenges. After spending four years at Suva Grammar School, Romuakalou’s transition to QVS has required him to adapt to a new environment where rugby is traditionally the main focus.
Reflecting on his move, Romuakalou acknowledged that leaving Suva Grammar was not an easy decision, but he was encouraged by the potential he saw in the QVS athletes. His recognition of talent was solidified during last year’s Coca-Cola Games, where he witnessed several promising athletes competing with skill and determination. This spurred him to enhance the coaching framework at QVS, leading him to enlist the help of experienced figures such as Banuve Tabakaucoro, as well as seeking technical coaches specializing in the 200 and 400-meter events.
Romuakalou is optimistic about the future of athletics at QVS. He believes there is significant untapped talent among the students, and with the right guidance and support, the school has the potential to excel in athletics. He remarked on the existing strong rugby tradition, emphasizing that while promoting athletics poses a challenge, there are always gifted athletes available who simply need the proper resources to succeed.
In a recent display of spirit and competition, the QVS inter-house athletics event concluded at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva, with Tovata house emerging as the overall champion. This event not only highlights the school’s commitment to fostering sporting talent but also serves as a valuable platform for athletes to showcase their skills. With dedicated coaches like Romuakalou leading the way, there is hope for a bright future in athletics at Queen Victoria School.
