New Nakasi Police Station Opens as Fiji Expands Its Policing Network

A significant milestone in community safety was celebrated today with the official inauguration of the Nakasi Police Station, an event led by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad. This modern facility, which opened its doors in August 2023, will serve as the headquarters for both the Nakasi Police and the Eastern Division.

The establishment of the Nakasi Police Station responds to the growing demands for policing services in an area that has experienced rapid urbanization, home to over 45,000 residents across Nakasi, Wainibuku, Davuilevu, and Koronivia. Its strategic location is designed to bolster law enforcement capabilities to manage the significant commercial and residential growth in the region, which includes new markets and a variety of retail outlets.

During the inauguration, Professor Prasad underlined the government’s commitment to strengthening the Fiji Police Force. He shared a vision of continual investments in law enforcement, boosting police capabilities, and fostering community partnerships. Emphasizing the importance of public confidence, he stated, “Public confidence in the police is crucial for peace, stability, and justice,” and noted the need for enhanced police visibility to build public trust.

Furthermore, the Deputy Prime Minister announced plans for more police stations in Labasa, Valelevu, and Nalawa, as well as proposals for community police posts in areas like Bua, Kadavu, and Taveuni, aimed at further improving local safety.

Built at a cost of $36 million, the Nakasi Police Station exemplifies the government’s commitment to modernizing policing and strengthening national security. Professor Prasad’s remarks reflect ongoing efforts to expand police manpower and enhance operational resources in response to challenges posed by rising crime rates.

Moving forward, these initiatives demonstrate a robust commitment to improving public safety and nurturing community relationships. The Nakasi Police Station not only stands as a new asset for law enforcement but also symbolizes the continuous efforts to cultivate security and trust within the communities it serves. These developments hold the promise of a safer environment for all Fijians, highlighting the potential for positive change through collaborative community policing and strategic planning.
