Today marks a slight relief from the excessive heat for many areas, with temperatures expected to decrease by about five degrees. However, gusty winds will create dangerous fire weather conditions, necessitating the continuation of red flag warnings for critical fire safety. While excessive heat and heat advisories remain in effect in certain counties, most areas of New Mexico will witness a decrease in heat advisories today.

Morning forecasts indicate a noticeable reduction in haze, giving a clearer start to the day. Despite a slight relief in temperature, winds will pick up, especially in Central and Western New Mexico, reaching gusts of over 30 mph. These conditions combined with temperatures still hovering in the 90s will contribute to an uncomfortable afternoon. Alongside these factors, storm chances are slightly present in the northeastern part of the state, where storms could potentially produce large hail and damaging wind gusts.

Looking forward, the forecast predicts that today’s numbers will drop across various regions, with highs reaching around 105 degrees in southern New Mexico. After today, temperatures are projected to gradually increase throughout the week, returning to the 90s and climbing back toward the low 100s by Thursday and Friday. Notably, southwest New Mexico may see some areas hitting 100 degrees again after today’s drop.

The weekend brings the promise of some storm activity that might help alleviate the heat, along with a significant temperature drop as we move into early next week. The storm chances are expected to kick in, providing hope for relief from the intense heat and dry conditions currently affecting much of the state.

As warmer temperatures start to regain strength later in the week, it’s crucial for residents to stay vigilant given the high fire risks and advisories in place. While much of New Mexico continues to grapple with hot weather, the incoming chance of storms offers a glimmer of hope for cooler temperatures and necessary moisture.
