Winter enthusiasts in New Mexico have cause for excitement as a significant winter storm is expected to bring up to six inches of snow this weekend. Meteorologists are predicting that areas in northern and central parts of the state may see substantial snowfall, including Albuquerque, which is anticipated to experience a mix of rain and snow starting Friday afternoon.

David Craft, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service (NWS) in Albuquerque, indicated that snowfall is likely to begin Friday night and peak on Saturday afternoon. The chance of receiving over three inches of snow differs across locations, with Albuquerque at 40%, Rio Rancho at 50%, and Santa Fe at 60%.

Travelers are advised to stay updated on weather conditions and any potential warnings. Craft warned of possible road closures and hazardous travel due to the incoming snow and cold temperatures. The eastern plains, including towns like Clayton, Tucumcari, and Clovis, are bracing for a drop in temperatures, with several nights expected to fall into the single digits.

In Albuquerque, the weather will shift from highs in the mid-50s on Thursday to the low to mid-40s on Friday and further drop to around 40 degrees during the snowfall on Saturday. The significant change follows an unusually warm December, which Craft noted could surprise many residents not accustomed to the abrupt winter conditions.

An interesting note on weather patterns in Albuquerque is the presence of “snow holes,” areas where strong winds alter the snowfall distribution due to warming effects. In these zones, the likelihood of snow could dip to 20%.

The Sangre de Cristos mountains are predicted to receive some of the highest accumulation, with a 70% chance of surpassing six inches, leading to promising conditions for skiing. Sipapu Ski Resort and Pajarito Mountain Ski Area are anticipating ten and seven inches of fresh snow respectively, which could significantly improve their current terrain offerings, especially after a lackluster snowfall season so far this winter.

Ski Santa Fe is also preparing for a possible influx of skiers as it expects between nine and thirteen inches of snow, although officials state that snowfall must first be observed on the ground. Resorts express optimism that the upcoming snowstorm will boost business, as fresh snowfall often draws eager winter sports enthusiasts.

As the weekend approaches, the promise of snow presents opportunities for recreation and enjoyment in New Mexico’s winter landscape, making it a hopeful time for those looking to embrace the ski season.
