Senate Republicans have chosen Senator John Thune of South Dakota to lead the party in the upcoming Congress, succeeding Mitch McConnell, who has stepped down after a historic tenure of 18 years. Thune, who has served as the Senate Republican whip, emerged as the victor in a tight race against Senators John Cornyn of Texas and Rick Scott of Florida.
Thune, who was first elected to the Senate in 2004, has steadily ascended through the leadership ranks, previously holding roles such as chair of the Republican conference and chairing the Commerce Committee before becoming whip in 2019. His election comes as the Republicans regained control of the Senate following the recent elections.
In his statement, Thune expressed gratitude for the support of his colleagues and underscored the unity of the Republican team behind President Trump’s agenda. Notably, while Thune aims to champion Trump’s goals, he has previously distanced himself from some of Trump’s more controversial claims, such as the unfounded assertion that the 2020 election was stolen.

While Thune received 23 votes in the first round, Cornyn garnered 15 and Scott trailed with 13, leading to Scott’s elimination. The final count showed Thune securing his position with 29 votes against Cornyn’s 24.

In addition to Thune’s election, Senator John Barrasso of Wyoming was named majority whip, while the third highest leadership position is set to be contested between Senators Tom Cotton and Joni Ernst, highlighting ongoing dynamics within the party.
