Vanessa Taylor and Antwain Banks have been appointed as the head coaches for the women’s and men’s basketball teams at Johnson C. Smith University, respectively, marking a significant step in rejuvenating the program. Taylor returns to the Golden Bulls, having previously led the women’s team from 2001 to 2012, during which she achieved a commendable record of 215-112 and guided the team to five NCAA Division II tournament appearances and a CIAA title in 2009. Her coaching prowess was recognized when she was named CIAA Coach of the Year after leading the team to a record-breaking 26-5 season in 2010-11.
Antwain Banks, who has been elevated from his interim position after a successful debut season with a 15-13 record, aims to restore the men’s program to its former glory. Under his leadership, the team secured its first CIAA tournament win since 2020, demonstrating promising potential for the future. Banks acknowledges the challenges presented by the current basketball landscape, especially with the transfer portal impacting team rosters. However, he remains committed to building a competitive team capable of contending for CIAA championships.
The Golden Bulls have faced instability in recent years following the departure of Steve Joyner Jr., who left the program after nine seasons. During this time, several coaches have attempted to lead the team, but Taylor’s return and Banks’ solid leadership offer hope for the rebuilding of the programs.
Both coaches bring extensive experience and a strong desire to revitalize Golden Bulls basketball. Their combined efforts could steer Johnson C. Smith back toward success in the CIAA, igniting a renewed sense of enthusiasm for the school’s athletic programs. The community and supporters are hopeful that with Taylor and Banks at the helm, a new chapter in Golden Bulls basketball is on the horizon, filled with potential accomplishments and a brighter future for both the men’s and women’s teams.
