TRENTON – The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) has implemented a travel restriction for commercial vehicles on several Interstate highways starting today at 3 p.m. as a significant winter storm is expected to impact the state. The storm forecast anticipates heavy snowfall, with the most substantial accumulations expected in North and Central Jersey.

Winter weather is predicted to commence this afternoon, transitioning from snow to ice and rain throughout the storm’s progression into Saturday, December 27. This weather pattern could lead to hazardous driving conditions, particularly in North Jersey and sections of Central Jersey. As part of this safety precaution, NJDOT officials are also advising all drivers to refrain from non-essential travel over the next two days.

The commercial vehicle travel restrictions will apply in both directions on the following highways:

– I-78 (entire length)
– I-80 (entire length)
– I-280 (entire length)
– I-287 (entire length)
– NJ Route 440, from the Outerbridge Crossing to I-287

The restrictions specifically target:

– All tractor trailers (with exceptions detailed in the Administrative Order)
– Empty straight CDL-weighted trucks
– Passenger vehicles towing trailers
– Recreational vehicles
– Motorcycles

Notably, the restrictions do not extend to the New Jersey Turnpike, the Garden State Parkway, or the Atlantic City Expressway. Essential public safety vehicles and personnel supporting healthcare facilities or critical infrastructure are also exempt from these travel limitations.

Trucks currently on the roads when the restrictions take effect are recommended to seek shelter in designated truck stops until the storm subsides, rather than parking on highway shoulders.

In collaboration with state and regional transportation agencies, NJDOT is prioritizing an effective response to the impending storm. Motorists are strongly encouraged to avoid unnecessary travel to enable safe and efficient snow removal processes. For those who must travel, NJDOT recommends the following safety measures:

– Reduce speed and adhere to posted speed limits
– Maintain a safe distance from plowing and spreading trucks
– Avoid passing between trucks engaged in a plow formation
– Plan for extra travel time and remain patient
– Exercise caution on bridges and ramps
– If road conditions become dangerous, find a safe location to wait until conditions improve
– Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle, including essential items like cell phone chargers, water, snacks, and a blanket

The commitment to roadway safety is paramount in these challenging weather conditions, as underscored by NJDOT Commissioner Fran O’Connor’s encouragement for everyone to prioritize safety while navigating the roads.
